No Love, No Tears, No Pain, Etc.

This week's Trifecta Writing Challenge is to come up with 33 words about love gone wrong; however, the piece cannot include the following words:

love, sad, tears, wept, heart, pain

Here are my 33:

Whispers yell
Rumors swell

My past sin
Your chagrin

Passion wanes
Our knot strains

Your mistrust
Breeds my lust

"Lock the door,
Paramour"

You suspect
I deflect

And you stay
While I stray

The Story of Us

This weekend's Trifextra challenge: a 33-word free write.

Hubs and my upcoming vow renewal (in honor of our 15th anniversary) has me feeling all gooey and lovey-dovey lately. Groaning and eye rolling are perfectly understandable.

First blind date
Hello, fate

Married fast
"Will it last?"

Honeymoon
Baby soon

And another
Joined big brother

Fifteen years
Sometimes tears

Mostly smiles
Despite trials

Love abounds
And surrounds

You

Me

Us

Before stretch marks, worry lines, gray hair and all
the fun bonuses that come with children.

In the interest of full disclosure, that kid on the right is
really about 4 inches taller than me. (Thank you, heels!)

The Girl Behind the Wall

Pluck her from her comfort zone.
Convince her not to stay alone.

The charming girl behind that wall
Is terrified to let it fall.

She’s going to take a lot of work.
For that, just thank a certain jerk.

The one who baited, promised, flattered
And—once he won her—left her shattered.

Now every man’s a ruthless snake,
A calling card for more heartache.

She’s had her guard up much too long.
Are you the one to prove her wrong?

Restore her faith in fairy tales?
Put the wind back in her sails?

It won’t be easy; she’ll resist.
She tends to soften when she’s kissed.

But please make sure your lips are true.
I’m ... she's pinning her last hopes on you.

This week's Trifecta Writing Challenge: The entry must be 33-333 words and include the word "pluck" as defined below:

PLUCK
to move, remove, or separate forcibly or abruptly <plucked the child from the middle of the street>

Word count: 124

My Sweet Apostrophe

This weekend's Trifextra challenge: Write a 33-word apostrophe. About.com defines apostrophe as, "A figure of speech in which some absent or nonexistent person or thing is addressed as if present and capable of understanding."

So, of course, my first impulse was to write an apostrophe about the punctuation mark of the same name. Yep, that's how my mind works. I've learned to just go with it.

O, my sweet apostrophe!
Show me thy versatility.
How I love when you’re possessive.
Join two words as one. Impressive!
Do pluralize that single letter,
But not whole words. (“S” does that better.)

Attachment

Ravenous moans permeate the emptiness of my loft.
Fingers uncoil my carefully executed crown of curls.
I love.
He pities.
Guilt and scarred wrists tether us for now.
I will settle for that.

Dear Diary

This weekend's Trifextra Writing Challenge is to write a haiku: an unrhymed verse form of Japanese origin having three lines containing usually five, seven, and five syllables respectively.

So, here is my 17-syllable tribute to the diary:

Cleanse my soul, paper.
Capture, you, my heart's riddles.
No lies; no judgments.

A Birthday Poem for Hubs
a.k.a. Suck It, Hallmark!

I tried to find the perfect card
To celebrate you, Honey.
But this blog post will have to do 'cause
Cards cost too much money.

Your (cough) cheap-ass (cough) frugal wife
Would rather die than pay
Six big ones for some mass-produced,
One-poem-fits-all cliché.

So I'm like, "Who needs Hallmark?"
I've been known to drop a rhyme.
And since I'm gainfully unemployed,
I certainly have the time

To tell you just how blessed I am
to have you in my life.
Thanks for puttin' a ring on it
And making me your wife.

As housewives go, I'm not the most
Domestically inclined.
But when the laundry's piling up
You never seem to mind.

You snake out slimy clumps of hair
Each time the shower clogs.
And that's a lot of snaking since
I shed more than the dogs.

You rescued me from snow and now
We're close to Mickey's house,
Which means I get more visits with
My favorite cartoon mouse.

You're always so supportive of
My "projects," and my schemes.
Your faith in me inspires me
To go after my dreams.

Truth is I'm no day at the beach.
Let's face it: I'm a pain.
My snarky, stubborn streak would drive
A lesser man insane.

You take the time to know our kids
When some dads barely bother.
Our babies are so fortunate
To have you as their father.

I never thought I'd find a guy
As awesome as my dad
Then I met you and, I must say,
I didn't do half bad.

Well, that's your birthday poem, Hubs.
I'm sorry if it sucks.
I know it's not a Hallmark, but
I did save six whole bucks!

Helping Daughter
reach new heights
Guiding Son through
life's little storms

He does claim them
most of the time
.
Sorry, ladies. He's all mine.

Summer in 33 Words

This weekend's Trifecta Writing Challenge is to describe summer in 33 words.

Humidity overpowers air
Sleek becomes frizzy, R.I.P. sexy hair

Stovetop hiatus; oven, be still
Tag you’re it, Mr. Grill

“No-Shave November” stretched into May
Fur's gotta go now; bare legs on display

#

Dear poetry Nazis (myself included): The meter totally sucks, but please overlook that in the spirit of summer fun, OK? Thanks.
